Northeastern Thailand

Ubon Ratchathani / Udon Thani

The northeast region consists of 19 provinces: Amnat Charoen, Buri Ram, Chaiyaphum, Kalasin, Khon Kaen, Loei, Maha Sarakham, Mukdahan, Nakhon Ratchasima ( Khorat), Nakhon Phanom, Nong Bua Lam Phu, Nong Khai, Roi Et, Sakon Nakhon, Si Sa Ket, Surin, Ubon Ratchathani, Udon Thani and Yasothon.

The Northeast is called E-san in Thai. The Mekhong River is a natural border that separates Thailand with Laos and Cambodia. E-san used to be under Khmer control and there are many hostorical ruins with Khmer architectural styles. Phanom Rung Sanctuary in Buri Ram is a place of worship for Hindu's and so is Phimai Santuary in Nakhon Ratchasima.

In Ban Chiang Village in Udon Thani they discovered 5,000 year old Bronze Age skeletons and tools. Pha Team National Park is an excellent place to relax beside the Mekhong River there are also ancient cave paintings, strange rock formations and sandstone flats scattered around the National Park.

The culture in E-san is ancient and you can participate in some of their famous festivals like the Candle Festival and the Illuminated Boat Procession in Ubon Rachathani.
