The southern region consists of 14 provinces: Chumphol, Krabi, Phangnga, Phuket, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Narathiwat, Pattani, Phattalung, Ranong, Songkhla, Satun, Surat Thani, Trang and Yala.
The Srivijaya Empire which is steeped in legend and mystery used to dominate this region including the Malay Peninsula and Java 1,500 years ago. Archaeological discoveries in Surat Thani indicate the former empires splendour.
The South of Thailand is a sea lover's paradise, the peninsula has endless beaches ruuning down both sides. The west coast's beaches are on the Andaman Sea and the east coast's beaches are on the Gulf of Thailand. The scenery is fantastic here and there are many mountains, beaches, waterfalls, caves, lakes and colorful coral reefs to visit. There are many attractive islands such as Phuket which is the biggest island in Thailand, Phi Phi islands in Krabi, Similan islands and Surin islands in Phang Nga, Samui and Pha Ngan in Surat Thani.
