The central region consists of 22 provinces: Ang Thong, Bangkok , Chachoengsao, Chai Nat, Kanchanaburi, Lop Buri, Nakhon Nayok, Nakhon Pathom, Nonthaburi, Pathum Thani, Phetchaburi, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya, Prachinburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Ratchaburi, Sakaeo, Samut Prakan, Samut Sakhon, Samut Songkhram, Saraburi, Sing Buri and Suphan Buri.
The capital of Thailand used to be called Ayuttaya for 417. Ayuttaya is 1 hour north of Bangkok. It was established in the Chao Phraya river basin which is very fertile land the area is also rich in culture and history. During the Ratanakosin period the capital was moved to present day Bangkok more than 200 years ago. You can visit the ancient city of Ayuttaya and travel around the ruins which are now protected by UNESCO.
In Bangkok there are several must see sttractions such as The Grand Palace and Phra Kaeo Temple. Not far from Bangkok is Kanchaniburi famous for the Bridge over the River Kwai and World War II memorial. There are many other attractions in the central area such as markets, temples, national parks, and historical ruins.
